celebrating a year.
I promise this will be the last post about Silas' birthday. It's been an overwhelming theme in my head this past week -- my baby is turning one, my baby is turning one! It was a perfectly relaxed day-- waffles for breakfast, beach in the afternoon, and of course, a smash cake and a few presents. Chris and I even got to sneak off for a 'survival celebration' date night (thanks Mom and Dad!) , and I may have eaten several pounds of butter at the French restaurant we found.
I hope I look back at this post in the future when I'm debating whether or not to throw a party. Of all my siblings, my mom calls me her 'party girl.' Any excuse to celebrate. But I think that the blogging world has made me highly sensitive to things like the amount of stripey straws on the table, the Instagram-ability of the favors and so forth. Not everything needs to be a production. Instead of worrying about getting the right pictures for the blog, I was really able to celebrate the past year with Silas and gosh, that was refreshing.
Oh, and the little man took his first TWO steps yesterday! In the middle of a raging temper tantrum, he got enough fire in his belly to walk towards me. Lots of whooping and hollering and cracking up at his poor little angry self. We love you, Silas Kai!
My oldest will be 5 this year and she's only had one big party and it was because we were pcsing a few months later. All the others have been small gatherings with family and a few close friends and she's always really enjoyed that.

this look like a fun birthday! I'm so with you on "not everything needs to be a production" We celebrated our baby's 1st b-day in a way that he really enjoyed it, that's the point right?
ReplyDeleteIt is kind of funny to see how lots of 1st b-days around this time were pink or blue ombre and gold glitter....and of course lots of stripey straws hhehehe

ReplyDeleteMy family and I have always enjoyed having simple birthday celebrations with family and maybe a few close friends. I think there is such beauty in the simple celebrations of a special meal, a little fun, and a yummy dessert!
By the way, your family is truly beautiful. I smiled seeing the photos of all of you at the beach together. Congratulations on the celebration of him turning 1! It seems that it was just yesterday I was reading your pregnancy posts and here is a cute little boy growing, growing, growing!

I love hearing about Sila turning one. My daughter will be 1 next month and I love reading about your mommy experiences. It makes me feel like I am doing the right thing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reminding us that we don't need to make everything into a production. Someone asked me the other day what theme my daughters birthday party was going to be and I started to feel like a failure for not putting any thought into it. The idea of a family party is sounds like heaven!

Of course the birthday pictures are super cute, but I laughed out loud at his walking story. Kids are so hilarious sometimes. I teach English in China and some of their best English comes when they're frustrated; they bust out with some random English sentence that they've never been able to say before!

I LOVE that you had a simple day. I debated this for so long, but ultimately, in the Korean culture the first birthday is a HUGE celebration--my mom cant fly and so I want to make sure she has pictures of some of the ceremonial elements and traditional attire she bought for my daughter. So I'm throwing a party, but until she turns 5 it will probably be pretty low key on all the following birthdays!!

ReplyDeleteSilas's birthday looks absolutely perfect. Your comment about not everything having to be perfect, a huge production and "Instagram" worthy really hit home with me, as that is something I struggle with daily in life. Comparison is the biggest killer of joy.
